Kay Yasugi
Kay Yasugi is an Australian puppeteer, puppet maker, illustrator, and teacher who has worked alongside her mother to form the studio Pupperoos. She participated in several international festivals and projects that involved puppetry like the Copenhagen Puppet Festival, Prague Quadrennial, and China Quanzhou International Puppet Festival. Kay has also made and performed puppets for stage and screen including Where is the Green Sheep, The Amazing House, The 13-Storey Treehouse, and more. Yasugi also made puppets for many school productions of the reenactment of famous films and theatrical shows. It's a pity she never worked with any Henson puppeteers from Australia, for she probably wasn't old enough to do Farscape or Bambaloo. Her website stated that she even got to write Korean folktales that were read out loud online by The Wiggles, via the Korean Cultural Centre. Kay Yasugi must have felt thrilled to write folktales for the legendary children's band. In 2024, she created and performed puppets for the Canva Holiday Magic campaign as well as making a character called Fluffy the Therapy Dog used to deliver comfort to aged ones in rural health services, influenced by pets. In addition to making and performing puppets, she is also a member of a children's music group called The Vegetable Plot which is apparently award-winning. Kay is still working with puppets today at Pupperoos, working with Youngkyu Kwon (her mother) in making stories through puppetry, art, and words like in Puppet Pandemonium. Yasugi is so lucky to do so much in her career across Australia and the rest of the world. I do hope that someday she'll learn about the Henson Company and maybe meet a puppeteer from that company, it might never happen, but you never know. Until then, she should keep her puppetry career going so that more folks will want to know more about her work. Kay Yasugi, you're a talented puppet maker and performer, as well as a wonderful teacher based on all the schools you've worked at. Even though you never met nor heard of the Henson Company, you've done as much as they did. Don't stop doing Pupperoos, Fluffy the Therapy Dog, and other things you've created. You're born for the stage Kay. You're a star Yasugi!
