Darryl Worbey

Darryl Worbey is a British puppet designer, builder, and performer who is best known for freelancing at many companies over the years in his career, including with the Creature Shop. With the Creature Shop, he built puppets as well as supplied effects for many productions such as The Storyteller, The Ghost of Faffner Hall, Mother Goose Stories, TMNT films, and Dinosaurs. Darryl also worked with the Muppets on a few projects which were The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, and Muppets Most Wanted, not to mention two CD-ROMs. Worbey worked alongside puppet builder Jane Gootnick, on all of the series and other creature effects projects both in London and the USA until the late 1990s. Apart from the Creature Shop, he formed his own London-based studio in 1993, specialized in puppets, skins, and animatronics for entertainment. Some of his notable creations include rebranding Basil Brush and co-creating The Leprechauns from The Kicking, written and performed by Don Austen, John Eccleston, and Rebecca Nagan. Darryl Worbey and his studio also created puppets for The Ark, Beastie, and even the Tom Tom campaign, to name a few. But most notably, he worked on the Star Wars films Rogue One and The Last Jedi, working with Neal Scanlan as a senior puppet builder to Yoda (reprised by the great Frank Oz). He even built puppets for a client for 25 years, international ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, who did Muppet Treasure Island. Darryl also puppeteered on The Roly Mo Show, Fierce Creatures, Roland Rat, and an episode of Blue Peter, which shows he indeed is a puppeteer too. Worbey should probably keep in touch with the Muppet performers since he worked in the Creature Shop for several years. But he'll always be known for working at his studio in London creating all of those puppets. After all, there wouldn't be any Basil Brush if he hadn't rebranded the character. Darryl Worbey, you are a wonderful puppet designer, builder, and performer in the UK and USA. Keep on working at your studio and please remember what an honor it was to rebuild Yoda. Things just keep getting better with you around, if you know what I mean. Excellent puppets, effects, and animatronics Darryl. You're a tech wiz Worbey!
